Especially in the account of revealing Noah’s nakedness, this seems to imply that Canaan was involved in this event. From another specific angle of reflection, we will find some deep meanings inherently embedded in this detail.

According to the Hebrew, the word “Canaan” carries the meaning of commerce. As we know, the core mindset pattern of a merchant is to consider everything in terms of loss and gain, and to place personal interest in the first position above all other things. Therefore, it is obvious that Ham possessed this kind of merchant mindset pattern. He considered himself first and placed himself at the center.

Hence, when Ham saw the nakedness of his father, he told his two brothers without dealing with it in the correct way. In the law, when a man commits sin, he is identified as a sinner. However, as a matter of fact, the activation of the sinful mind precedes his action.

As we know, after the floodwaters, Noah was the leader of all human beings and every living creature in some way. Even though God Elohim had not assigned him formally, nevertheless he was the only legal representative of God on the earth. In other words, he held the authority and power from God to govern every living creature on the earth.

Moreover, Ham did not fear God because he did not respect the representative authority of God Elohim. His response to the nakedness of his father indicated that he considered himself first, rather than God Elohim. When a man fears God, he takes seriously anything related to God Elohim. But what his two brothers did showed that they feared God and respected the authority from God.

Although it seemed a small thing, it reflected their inner hearts and mindsets. When encountering a fallen person who represents God, the one who fears God will cover it first, not spread it around. To fear God is not to operate with the merchant mindset of loss and gain.

Genesis 9:22-24 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
