And he gave him tithes of all.

Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine. Salem means “peace,” and Melchizedek in Hebrew means “my king is righteous” or “king of righteousness.” He appeared suddenly in the narrative without prior introduction. Yet he was the priest of the Most High God, indicating that his priesthood existed earlier and stood higher than that of Aaron, who later became the high priest offering sacrifices for sin on earth. Melchizedek’s ministry was entirely different from Aaron’s. Instead of sacrifices, he brought bread and wine to Abram after Abram’s victory over the four kings. His appearance is mysterious and unique in Scripture, showing that he held a heavenly and eternal priesthood.

Since he was the priest of the Most High God, his ministry belonged to the heavenly realm. Therefore, it is reasonable to understand Abram’s victory as connected to the intercession of Melchizedek in heaven. God supported Abram through His heavenly priest.

Melchizedek blessed Abram and emphasized that the Most High God is the possessor of heaven and earth. Because Abram defeated God’s enemies on earth, God reclaimed authority over the land through His servant Abram. God acts according to the laws He established. After Satan rebelled, God allowed the authority of the earth to be handed to Lucifer. But through Abram’s victory, Melchizedek proclaimed God again as possessor of the earth, as He has always been of heaven.

Melchizedek offered bread and wine to Abram, signifying that Abram fought on God’s behalf. Since Lot also belonged to God’s people, Abram’s rescue of his “brother” was an act done for God. Therefore, Melchizedek supplied what Abram needed after the battle.

Furthermore, Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all he had taken. This showed Abram’s submission to God and his acknowledgment that the victory and its spoils belonged to God.

“And blessed be the Most High God, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” This blessing reveals a spiritual reality: God governs all things in heaven and cares for His people on earth.

Genesis 14:18-20 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
