When reading Genesis 1:2, you may feel curious about why God judged the earth and destroyed it. What happened during that time? If you want to understand this question, you should first know God and establish two concepts in your mind.
God is great and righteous. Regarding His greatness, He gives His creations free will and allows them to choose freely, rather than treating them like machines that only follow fixed instructions. Regarding His righteousness, He establishes laws, obeys those laws, and upholds them. If you break the laws He has set, you will suffer the consequences.
Now that you understand these two basic attributes of God, let us read several verses in the Bible. Isaiah 45:7 says:
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
God created darkness and evil. When you read this verse, you may feel shocked or find it unbelievable. However, when you reflect on it carefully, you will come to honor the greatness of God. He is so great that He does not limit everything but instead provides choices for His creations, especially through free will. Now let us read other passages: Isaiah 14:12–23 and Ezekiel 28:1–19.
These verses tell us how Lucifer, son of the morning, became God’s adversary. Because he desired more and exalted himself, he betrayed God. For example, Ezekiel 28:17 says: “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness.”
When reflecting on these verses, we are reminded of God’s greatness and righteousness, especially the free will He gives to His creations. Therefore, no further explanation is needed, because these verses speak clearly for themselves.
