Genesis1_2-מים

Let’s continue exploring Genesis 1:2: “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

Here are two essential existences: one is the Spirit, and the other is water. They are different and represent two different worlds—the spiritual world and the physical world. Since humanity fell, the spiritual world has been disconnected from almost all human beings. Remember the important difference: spirit is spiritual, and matter is physical. Both are related to mentality, but neither belongs to it; they are independent existences. Do not take them as the same, especially spirit and mentality (or soul).

By the way, why does water appear at the beginning of the Bible, rather than soil, rock, and so on? In the chemical world, hydrogen (H) is the first element in the periodic table. It provides basic material for God to reform the earth. After Genesis 1:2, the text is no longer about creation, but about re-creation or restoration.

There is also something interesting in the original Bible: the Hebrew word for water is “מים”. The letter ם is the final form of מ. Is this similar to H₂O?

When reflecting on this verse, you may find that it corresponds to the condition of coming into being. If you have ever seen how a hen incubates her chicks by covering the eggs, you may find that this image vividly illustrates how the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Please establish this basic concept: spirit and matter (the physical) are different existences.
