Genesis 11:1-2
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
How did the language of humanity come about? There is no obvious record that mentions it. Therefore, it is possible that humans began to speak language after Adam and Eve fell. Before they ate of the tree of good and evil, Adam and Eve had no sin within them. Since God is Spirit and created Adam after His kind, they communicated with each other in the spirit directly, without an outside medium to transfer information. It is recorded that Jehovah called upon Adam in the Garden after he fell. Hence, language came about from that time. On the other hand, after the fall, the functions of their spirit might have been lost.
From Adam to Noah, they developed a language gradually. However, which language did they speak? According to the Bible, they probably spoke the Hebrew language. First, God is the God of Shem, blessed by Noah, and Abraham was a descendant of Shem. Abraham spoke Hebrew. Secondly, Jesus Christ also cried out in Hebrew when He was nailed on the cross. Besides those reasons, there is another miraculous event in the history of humanity: a language revived after two thousand years. This is the Hebrew that Israel speaks today. Among the priests of the Jews, they used 22 Hebrew letters to communicate with God Elohim.
Hence, the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. There were no barriers of communication, and they could develop quickly. They found a plain in the land of Shinar and dwelt there. Shinar meant a country between two rivers. It was a perfect place for dwelling. It was also the ancient name of Babylon, which carried special meaning in the Bible.
