Genesis 12:4-5

So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

When Abram was seventy‑five years old, he had only begun to grasp a small portion of God’s will and purpose. In the natural world, it takes a long time for a person to become mature in soul. Although a man reaches physical maturity around eighteen, his mindset and inner life are still too young to understand the deeper things of God Elohim. Therefore, Abram only began to depart as the LORD had spoken to him at seventy‑five.

When Abram left Haran, he took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son. It is not easy for a person to abandon anything meaningful or important to him. Thus, Abram brought everything he had gathered—his possessions and the “souls” they had acquired in Haran. These things were essential for life in a fallen world. Without them, a man could not survive for long on the earth. Nevertheless, in God’s eyes, these things were secondary to His will, because God had originally arranged to supply all human needs. God knows what His people think and feel, and for this reason He allows them to experience Him throughout their lives.

Eventually, Abram, together with his wife and nephew, arrived in the land of Canaan. When you reach the place God has promised, you receive something special from Him. Although a Christian may suffer, wander, and take many wrong paths, he will finally arrive at the place to which God has called him.

In this way, Abram becomes a meaningful example for us as we experience the calling of God Elohim.
