Genesis1_26-image

Genesis 1:26

And God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”

God made man, so why not create (בָּרָא) man? When the word make (עָשָׂה) is used, it implies the existence of a blueprint or reference. The Son of God is the reference and blueprint for making man. It also means that there is some existing foundation used for making man. The Son of Man is the firstborn of every creature (Colossians 1:15). Humanity is the offspring of God.

“In our image” means that there is a picture of God reflecting His features and character. For example, we sometimes draw the image of moving leaves to reflect the nature of the wind, even though we cannot see the wind itself. We express its character indirectly through the leaves interacting with it. In the same way, the image shows the nature and character of God. It indicates that humanity has similar qualities to God.

“After our likeness” means that humanity was formed with an appearance or pattern resembling God. That is why humanity has a unique shape and beautiful appearance. We share a likeness that is similar to God’s.

As a human being, you should know that you are related to God. You should seek the mission of your life. After reflecting on this verse, you may find an answer to the ancient philosophical question: “Where do you come from, and where are you going?” I hope you find the meaning and purpose of your life.
