Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to till (dress) it and to keep (guard) it.
When reading this verse, it feels a little strange. God had already caused every tree that is good for food to grow out of the ground, and God saw that His creation was good. Yet here God put the man into the garden to till it and guard it. This may express a hidden intention of God through this way of writing.
As we read Matthew 13:1–23, it reveals the meaning of this verse. According to the parable of the sower, the ground represents the human heart, and the birds represent the enemy (Satan). That is why Adam needed to till and guard the garden. In fact, this is a mystery of the kingdom of heaven, which Jesus explained to us.
After hearing the word of the kingdom, we should prepare our hearts and till them. We should renew our minds and read the word of God, which helps us understand His word. Meanwhile, we should soften our hearts and allow the seed to grow within us. When we meet tribulation or persecution, we should look to the Lord God. We should not worry about this life or be deceived by riches. If we examine them deeply, we will find that they fade away and become a trap to capture people.
Therefore, we should till our ground (heart) and guard it, watching out lest the wicked one come and snatch away what was sown in our hearts.
This verse also reveals God’s desire to impart His life to humanity by sowing the seed of the tree of life into the human heart.
