Genesis2_21-23

Genesis 2:21–23

And Jehovah Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon Man, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.

And Jehovah Elohim built the rib that He had taken from Man into a woman, and brought her to Man.

And Man said, This time it is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this shall be called Woman, because this was taken out of Man.

These verses are interesting because there is a common idea that a man lacks a rib as a result of this act of God. However, according to modern anatomical research, both men and women have twelve pairs of ribs, with none missing. Therefore, some people sometimes claim that the Bible is false based on these verses. As a matter of fact, the Bible is accurate.

From the entire Bible, there is no verse that says a man lost or lacks a rib. It is unclear why people hold this view. As we know, if a man’s finger is cut off, this loss is not passed on to his children, because acquired physical changes are not inherited. This is basic genetic knowledge today. Therefore, even though Jehovah God took one of Adam’s ribs, this physical condition would not be passed down to his descendants.

Perhaps some people explain these verses based only on their imagination rather than on what the Bible actually records.

When ribs (bones) are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, Scripture says, “Not a bone of him shall be broken” (Numbers 9:12; Psalms 34:20; John 19:36).

When we read the verse carefully, the sequence of actions is similar to modern surgery: first, a deep sleep (like anesthesia); second, something is taken from the body; finally, the flesh is closed.

Jehovah Elohim built the rib into a woman. Obviously, a single rib would not be sufficient material to form a woman physically. So what does the “rib” represent? If we understand it as a blueprint or foundational pattern, the description makes more sense.

Then Adam gives the explanation: “bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” This may seem even more puzzling. What did Adam mean? Modern discoveries, such as the double-helix structure of DNA revealed by Watson and Crick, show that DNA contains and encodes all biological information. According to this genetic “blueprint,” humans reproduce accurately.

Thus, Adam’s words may point to shared life and nature—what we would today understand as shared biological essence. Before the fall, humans may have possessed abilities far greater than ours. Perhaps Adam could perceive the inner structure of life without modern instruments.

Adam called her “Woman,” showing his wisdom and high intelligence, because he understood this deep relationship.

Perhaps elements similar to what we now call genetic information were hidden within what Scripture calls the “rib.”
