Genesis2_24-25

Genesis 2:24–25

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

These verses are written from the perspective of the writer, Moses. Concepts such as father, mother, wife, and shame appeared after the fall of man. The writer naturally deduced the conclusion of cleaving to one’s wife by following Adam’s previous words. A mature man should leave his parents, cleave to his wife, and become one flesh. This principle has applied to human society for thousands of years. Based on this rule, the family is the foundational unit in human history, and humans have built tribes, kingdoms, nations, and even modern society upon it.

Leaving one’s parents also means that a mature man is independent and should walk his own path in life. A man and his wife belong to each other, not to their parents. If one wants to find his other part, the first step is to leave his parents.

That a man and a woman become one flesh is a natural rule, which we also call marriage. However, fallen human nature acts against this rule, and some practice homosexuality. This always makes Jehovah God angry because it disobeys His righteousness. Generally, it leads to punishment and destruction from heaven (Genesis 18:20–19:25). It is sorrowful that some regions support homosexual marriage. Such actions only accumulate the anger of Jehovah God. The destruction and disaster that come upon those people will be great.

They were not ashamed though they were naked because they had not eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Sin had not yet activated certain functions of their soul. The feeling of shame mainly comes from the soul, that is, the psychological realm.

There is a difference in the work of Jehovah God between chapter one and chapter two. In chapter two, He carried out His work according to human conditions, especially physical laws. That is why He built a woman for Adam from his rib, rather than using His power in the same way as in chapter one.
