Genesis 4:8-9

: “And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the Lord said unto Cain, ‘Where is Abel thy brother?’ And he said, ‘I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?'”

Because Cain’s offering was not accepted, he became envious and filled with wrath toward his brother. Cain attempted to serve God according to his own methods and became increasingly prideful. Consequently, he grew arrogant and vain. Compared to his brother Abel, Cain felt slighted. When God asked him why his countenance had fallen, Cain may have already intended to harm his brother.

Cain spoke with Abel and led him to the field. Since Cain was a “tiller of the ground,” they likely went to a place where Cain held mastery. According to the scriptures, it is possible that Cain’s invitation to the field was a trick, allowing him to find an opportunity for a sudden sneak attack. Had they fought face-to-face, Cain might not have been able to slay Abel. As a shepherd, Abel dealt with the slaughter of sheep and likely possessed the agility and combat awareness required to manage and protect his flock.

When God asked Cain where his brother was, Cain displayed his arrogance. He acted almost as a demon in that moment, speaking of his brother with total apathy. In fact, he had been aligned with the serpent for so long that his nature had become similar to it.

If God had not questioned him and executed justice, no one else would have done so at that time. A righteous man was killed because of religious envy. Throughout history, those who worship God according to their own will have often persecuted those who worship God according to His divine will.
