Genesis 4:19-21
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
With the development achieved by Lamech’s forefathers, he possessed greater wealth and power. There was a city to protect him and enough food for daily living. Therefore, Lamech had more energy and time to pursue other things. He married two wives, which indicated that he desired more sexual pleasure. One of his wives was named Adah, a name meaning “decoration.” This suggests that women had begun to adorn themselves to attract men. On the other hand, strong and powerful men took beautiful women as ornaments in their lives.
Jabal, born to Adah, was the father of those who dwell in tents and keep cattle. Therefore, humanity had learned how to graze livestock. At that time, cattle were not used for food but for offerings, making clothing, or cultivating the ground. This means that Adah’s descendants began to use cattle for plowing or for making garments from animal skins.
Jubal, Jabal’s brother, was the father of those who play the harp and the organ. This indicates that humanity had accumulated enough wealth and food to enjoy leisure activities. Therefore, music—humanity’s first form of entertainment—was invented by Jubal.
The descendants of Cain focused on their living, food, security, clothing, entertainment, and similar concerns. They immersed themselves entirely in their own world, without God Elohim.
